Abstract
Antik dönemlerden günümüze kadar bir ifade aracı olan resim sanatı; sanatçıların sorunlarını ve toplumsal sorunları dile getirmede önemli bir rol üstlenmiştir. Resim ile ifadede sanatçı, biçim ve rengi kullanarak bir iletişim dili oluşturmuş ve bu dil ile aktarımı çağlar boyu devam ettirmiştir. Roma döneminden günümüze kadar süregelen ve birçok sanatçı tarafından ele alınan grotesk anlatım ile sanatçılar; kendilerinin ve yaşadıkları dönemin sorunlarını bir dışavurum dili olarak kullanmışlardır. Grotesk ifade, yaşanılan döneme ayna tutan bir yaklaşımda olduğundan zaman içinde farklı anlamlarla da yoğrularak zenginleşmiş ve tasvir öğesi olarak resimde varlığını sürdürmüştür. Sanatçılar grotesk anlatımla, abartılı deformasyonlara, güzeli ifade etmek için çirkini vurgulamaya, ironi ve hiciv ihtiva eden anlatımlara, kaba, ürkütücü, gülünç durumlara önem vermişlerdir. Resimlerinde grotesk ifadeleri mizahi ve fantastik üslupla ele alan ekspresyonist sanatçılardan biri olan James Ensor, yaşadığı çevreyi betimlerken şaşırtıcı ve ürkütücü imgelerinin ardında gerçek insan figürlerini gizlemiştir. Bu durumu, kullandığı maskeler, iskelet figürler, çirkin ve abartılı uzuvlara sahip figürlerle ortaya koymuştur. Böylece toplumsal sorunları mizahi bir bakış açısıyla seyircinin eleştirisine sunmuştur. Bu araştırma ile James Ensor’un grotesk imgelere sahip 8 eserinin, arka planda ihtiva ettikleri anlamların çözümlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Resimlerin çözümlenmesinde eser analizi metodu kullanılmış ayrıca araştırma literatür tarama ile de desteklenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda; mizah ile trajedinin iç içe geçtiği sahneler, ürkütücü, abartılı grotesk uzuvların olduğu figürler, iskelet figürler; toplumsal sorunlara dikkat çekme unsuru olarak kullanılmış ve sosyal, eleştirel tavırla seyirciye sunulmuştur.

Abstract
The art of painting, which has been a means of expression from ancient times to the present; played an important role in voicing the problems of artists and social problems. In expression with painting, the artist has created a language of communication by using form and color and has continued the transmission with this language throughout the ages. Artists with the grotesque narration, which has continued from the Roman period to the present and handled by many artists; they used the problems of themselves and the period in which they lived as a language of expression. Since the grotesque expression is in an approach that mirrors the period, it has been enriched by being kneaded with different meanings over time and has continued its existence in the painting as a depiction element. Artists gave importance to exaggerated deformations, emphasizing the ugly to express the beautiful, expressions containing irony and satire, vulgar, frightening and ridiculous situations with grotesque expression. James Ensor, one of the expressionist artists who handles grotesque expressions with a humorous and fantastic style, hides real human figures behind his surprising and frightening images while describing the environment he lives in. He revealed this situation with the masks he used, skeleton figures, figures with ugly and exaggerated limbs. Thus, he presented the social problems to the criticism of the audience with a humorous point of view. With this research, it is aimed to analyze the background meanings of 8 works of James Ensor with grotesque images. Artwork analysis method was used in the analysis of the paintings, and the research was also supported by literature review. As a result of the research; scenes where humor and tragedy are intertwined, grotesque figures with frightening and exaggerated limbs, skeleton figures; It was used as an element to draw attention to social problems and presented to the audience with a social, critical attitude.
