Abstract

Abstract

Terrorism, differently from mass killing or genocide, aims to give political messages to larger groups than its victims and shock them by carrying out violent acts. Political psychology studies relations of individuals, groups, nations and leaders and interaction between them.By this article, it is studied the political psychology of terrorism. Terrorism may have social reasons as well as individual reasons. Just as the past traumas, historical and political experiences, and cultural structures of societies affect their future political choices, individual experiences also affect people's futures. In this direction, political psychology argues that situations should be handled both at the social scale and individually. In other words, individuals' political psychological attitudes are not independent of the society they live in. Likewise, the common histories of societies are not independent of individuals. For this reason, while studying the political psychology of terrorism, it is necessary to examine both the individual and the society separately, and also to consider both together. Sometimes the problems experienced by the person in early adolescence, family traumas are effective in terrorizing individuals, and sometimes groups oppressed by the state may see terrorism as the only way out. This study examined the political psychology of terrorism.
