Abstract

Abstract

In the first half of the twentieth century, catastrophes that shook Europe and the world - the First World War, the Second World War, and the Holocaust that took place in the same period - caused widespread devastation and led to the redrawing of borders. In this process, the modern subject was rendered homeless and uprooted, and its relationship with the past assumed a traumatic dimension. Stefan Zweig, who personally witnessed the tragedy of this era, took stock of a vanished civilization in his work The World of Yesterday: Memoirs of a European, written during his years of exile. This study aims to examine Zweig's aforementioned work within the framework of Svetlana Boym's theory of nostalgia, particularly the concept of reflective nostalgia. By addressing the act of turning toward the past that lies at the heart of the work within a theoretical framework, the study aims to contribute to a gap in the Turkish literature on Zweig, and it carries out this examination through close reading. Etymologically derived from the words nostos (return home) and algia (pain), nostalgia expresses the longing of the modern individual for the past in the face of the loss of time and space. In this study, the expansionist policies of Hitler's Germany and its Aryan race ideology are addressed as an example of restorative nostalgia, which seeks to reconstruct the past through nationalist myths. In contrast to this destructive landscape, Zweig's stance is associated with the concept of reflective nostalgia, which acknowledges the irreversibility of time. The examination reveals that Zweig uses nostalgia not as a means of returning home, but as a means of survival grounded in individual and cultural memory against the barbarism of the age in which he found himself.
