The Baltic geography has been of particular importance for the states aiming at ensuring both European and Eurasian unity. This importance has increased the interest in the Baltic geography. However, this interest of the states that have interests in the region made the Baltic people very worried and led to struggles for defining their identity and independence for many years. Thus, the peoples living in the Baltic region witnessed to history in similar conditions. German and Russian interventions, independence between the two wars and the Soviet process, from all of these Baltic countries were affected simultaneously. Latvia has been located in the middle of Estonia and Lithuania. Due to its location, it could not keep itself independent from the developments in the Baltic geography. While the other two Baltic countries preferred Western-oriented foreign policy after independence, Latvia could not remain indifferent to this situation. In this article, the history of Latvia is examined and current Latvian foreign policy preferences are also discussed. Therefore, the main purpose of this article has been to gain knowledge about the Baltic geography specific to Latvia.
