Abstract


THE GREAT MOSQUES IN KOZAN (SIS) AND THEIR INSCRIPTIONS READ

In the early Islamic civilization, the architectural structures and elements of other cultures were influenced and they were left with an Islamic originality. In the cities, which were conquered by the force of arms, the largest shrine (church, synagogue, etc.) was first turned into a mosque and a large inosque was started to built in the direction of Islamic art. Thus, in the Islamic cities large and central mosques were built, where the Friday prayes were performed, and these mosques were called as Grand mosques. The Mamluks is a Turkish state founded in Egypt. The Turkization of Çukurova was achieved through Mamluks when Kozan (Sis) was under the Mamluk rule, Aleppo was among the registers of the regency of the regent. Because of this status, it was administered by the governors sent from the center. In Kozan there is the Hoşkadem Mosque or Büyük Mosque which is known by the language of the people, which display of the domination of the Mamluks. Therefore, the mosque which the people call the Küçük Mosque, was built in 1526. The two mosques, which had an important place in Turkish – Islamic architecture, was in the class of domed in front of the mihrab, Grand mosques. It was built on a sloping terrain in the shape of rectangular from East to West. In this search, Hoşkadem Mosque and its inscription which is in the South of Turkey in Kozan/Adana, is discussed. It is a door opening to Syria and is an example of Grand mosque. It was built in the term of Egyption Mamlukes. Additionally dated to the time of the Ottoman Empire the Küçük Mosque was examined and its inscription was read and interpreted. The characteristics of the inscriptions were examined.
