Abstract

THE INVESTIGATION OF FACTORS AFFECTING BURGLARY FROM THE VIEW OF ROUTINE ACTIVITIES THEORY

Burglary being seen in all societies is one of the most frequent crime types. There is enough evidence to believe that burglary is also widespread in Turkey. Burglary’s direct and indirect casualties affect many people comprehensively. In order to minimize these effects, factors facilitating burglary should be found out and understood. This current study investigated factors which make an apartment flat a victim of burglary. Routine Activity Theory, known as a victimization theory, which can successfully explain many crimes in the last decades, was used for the theoretical frame of this study. 215 burglarized apartment flats and 222 non-burglarized apartment flats were compared in terms of 12 different characteristics of the flats. The data were collected through questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Chi Squared test on SPSS. Findings showed that there are significant differences between these two types of flats in terms of the level of monthly income, number of flat in each floor, type of apartment blocks, security guards, type of bells, and type of residents. On the other hand, number of floors, number of residents, number of years lived in flats, type of households, security cameras, and type of doors were not found as significant variables.
